When The Who were recording "My Generation," John Entwhistle used a newly-available-in-the-UK Danelectro bass, and kept breaking bass strings during the solo. Since replacement strings were not yet available, he had to go out a buy a new bass to be able to get the full set (talk about shopping sprees:P)
